ALAN L. OLSEN CHAIRS MILLION-DOLLAR SCOUT CAMPAIGN
Managing Partner of CPA firm Greenstein Rogoff Olsen & Co. named Friends of Scouting Council Chairman
FREMONT, Calif., February 24, 2009 – Alan Olsen knows the value of Scouting. Not because he’s managing partner of successful CPA firm Greenstein Rogoff Olsen & Co., but because he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, introduced Scouting to his seven children, and serves on the Bay Area Council Board of Directors for Boy Scouts of America.
So when he had the opportunity to take on yet another community service challenge, he didn’t hesitate. As the newly appointed chairman of the Bay Area Friends of Scouting Council, Olsen is tasked with raising $1 million this year to support five districts and more than 300 packs, troops, teams and crews in San Francisco and Alameda counties.
“Today’s youth are faced with unique challenges such as the decay of moral values, deterioration of the family, diminishing self sufficiency, and a decline in personal responsibility,” Olsen says. “Scouting programs have consistently developed some of the greatest leaders of our time. This nation needs these programs, now more than ever, to instill those qualities in our next generation of leaders.”
Several Eagle Scouts have become leaders in their fields, he notes, including space explorers such as Neil Armstrong; politicians such as Gerald Ford; businessmen such as Sam Walton of Wal-Mart; sports legends such as Hank Aaron; and entertainers such as Steven Spielberg.
Olsen wants to ensure today’s youth have sufficient funding to enjoy the Scouting benefits they, he and his children had.
Friends of Scouting secures operating funds needed by the San Francisco Bay Area Council to provide services for unit programs. These include training, insurance, program materials, advancement materials, camping facilities and programs, council and district activities, and much more. In addition to the Youth Leadership Training Center in San Leandro, the Council maintains three camps: Rancho Los Mochos in the hills above Livermore; Wente Scout Reservation east of Willits; and Camp Royaneh near the Russian River in Cazadero.
