She explained that choosing to deduct income taxes instead of sales taxes may not always give the best result. You can add the sales tax that you paid on a car, boat, airplane or home-building materials purchased in 2008 to the sales-tax amount from the IRS tables or actual sales-tax receipts if that provides a higher deduction.
